“I found this ID bracelet after my dad’s funeral when I was 16, rummaging through his little leather treasure chest full of cufflinks and buttons and such; I snuck off with it and a vintage pair of bucking horse cufflinks. In a sense, it embodies the gentle cowboy life I had before moving to New York and has been with me on all the adventures that have unfolded since - from every Bergdorf event, every fashion week, every new apartment, to every thrill and heartache. I never take it off.”

“These bowls were made by a dear friend and given to me by another. We were all leaving Colorado, leaving each other, other good friends, family, and the warm, full, comfortable lives we had made for ourselves there. Their colors—greens from the ocean and glacial lakes, blues from day to midnight, and sun-bleached oranges—remind me, too, of the West itself, where it sometimes seems a little easier to remember you do not need any more than these things.”

“This dress, what I call my “Guatemalan muumuu,” is the most comfortable thing I own and only my closest friends and family have had the great pleasure of seeing me in it (and maybe a delivery man or two). While on a business trip with my father several years ago, I picked it up at a market between trips to the rainforest and Mayan ruins. I would live my entire life in it if it was socially acceptable.”

“This book mysteriously appeared on the family bookshelf one day. It was the first book my wife and I read aloud to each other, often in tearful hysteria, and it’s since become an annual read-a-loud tradition. When we’re feeling particularly troubled by life we find an over-the-top passage to recite and it’s never failed to lighten the mood.”

“My grandmother has given me lots of beautiful old clothing over the years and these navy boots are my favorite. She bought them in the mid-seventies when she was a young widow and an ad-taker at The New York Times. I feel strong when I wear them.”

“I acquired this obsidian star tetrahedron at the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan, Mexico. The shape is also known as a merkaba, which is an energy field around the human body and can be used as means for intergalactic travel. I am very attracted to obsidian for its ability to absorb and destroy negative energies.”

“I spent New Year’s 2012 alone at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur doing a yoga and meditation retreat. It’s indescribable how important it was for me to reflect on the year and have a clear head moving into the future. This pyrite egg, which is also meant to give structure to creativity, is a token of that magical experience.”
